The Race is On
Hebrews 12: 1-3: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great
cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that
so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for
us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and protector of our faith, who
for the joy set before him endured the cross.
Racing occupies a
significant portion of my time. At work, I support two Formula 1 racecar
drivers with fuels and lubricants. After work, I go running to train for
cross-country or track races. In both cases, the competitors work hard to
“throw off everything that hinders”. We work to make the car lighter and more
efficient. Runners seek the lightest footwear and clothing to gain every second
they can. Both the driver and the runner require perseverance to remain
focused, ignoring the distractions that might compromise their performance both
in practice and in the race itself.
Following Christ requires
the same dedication and focus. As Christians, it is time to put our games faces
on. We cannot afford to put off what we know we should be doing for even one
more day. Now is the time to commit ourselves to break the bad habits, mend the
damaged relationships, forgive those who wronged us, give more and expect less.
Let us throw off the heavy burden of pride, lighten our load by confessing our
weaknesses and let go of the anchor of guilt. Let’s become focused on the cross
– fast and nimble – sprinting, not loping toward the goal. When we grow weary,
Jesus will sustain us, and the great crowd of witnesses that is the church will
cheer us on. Prayer and worship will cut the snares of sin, to let us run
faster and more freely in the race.
This race is better than any
one
Lord, sustain us as we try
to break free from our sin, and run quickly to become your disciples. Amen.
