Holy Trinity Lenten Devotion

6 March 2007

No temptation has seized you except what is common to men. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. 1 Corinthians 10:13

During Lent we consider temptation and the contrast between the wide, easy path to Hell compared to the narrow path to Heaven.  The spiritual journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter reflects the path each of us walks during our lives. The short Lenten walk mirrors our journey as Christians from the realization of our own sin to our triumph with Jesus at the Feast of Joy and Gladness.

Now, as we wait for the bright sun of Easter to dawn, we ask whether we will be ruled by sin.  Can we turn away from temptation? Will we be drawn into the Light or will we wander off into the Darkness? Will we be in but not of this World?

These are all questions we must consider during Lent. Not without hope, like those who have not heard the Gospel, but knowing, as Paul told the Corinthians, that we will not be tempted beyond what we can bear. God’s grace can save us. Our debt is already paid. We can return to the Lord for Christ’s blood has set us free. The empty cross is not a symbol; it is the Promise.
