MUSIC

Monday, March 20:

As you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 5:19-20

As I read these words, I was reminded of the too numerous times to count when singing MUSIC to the Lord blessed my soul.  Singing has always been a way for me to give thanks for all the Lord has blessed me with.  Music – whether the old standby hymns – “Faith of our Fathers,”  “Rock of Ages,” “Amazing Grace,” or new music by Amy Grant and Michael Smith – flows over my soul like waves on a beach.

Like waves on a beach slowly erode sand and create new patterns, so does music to my being.  The melodies speak to me and slowly erode the tension and tightness that come with everyday living in the world.  With the songs flowing over me, I become a new being in Christ.

Whether I am singing in the Sunday morning Choir or with the merry makers on Saturday evening, I revel in the giving of thanks to the Lord that occurs.  To a person, Holy Trinity members lift their voices in joyous celebration giving of themselves to be in harmonious unity with like voices.

Music – if I sing – I am blessed; if I listen – I am blessed; if I share – I am blessed.

Music fills my soul.  When I am lonely – music comforts me; when I am happy – music emboldens me; when I am sad – music soothes me.  Through all of life’s travels, music borders my road of life with flowers.

Dear Lord – Thank you for the gift of music.  Thank you for the celebration of your life through song.  Thank you for the individuals at Holy Trinity – those who make music and those who enjoy the music that is made.  May you always remind us that music is the expression of the soul.  In your son’s name, AMEN.
