A Banquet of Wishes

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

-- Luke 14:13-14

When I first decided to volunteer with the Make A Wish foundation a few years ago, I wondered how I would be able to assist these children in getting their "fondest wish" as is the mission of this foundation. I felt they deserved whatever goodness they could receive.

These children are some of the bravest that I have ever met. Many have endured countless painful treatments, nights away from home in strange hospital environments, endless trips to various doctors, and never knowing if this would be the last treatment, radiation, or hospitalization. Also if in remission, would this disease reoccur.

I became very comfortable in visiting with these children and their families in their homes and planning trips or fulfilling other requested wishes. Many of these trips would be to Disney world. I remember going to visit a family one evening and 3 little children greeted me and a fellow volunteer at the door by asking if we were "those Mickey Mouse guys". These families welcome me into their homes. I see the brave faces of the family members, parents, siblings and other relatives with smiles, funny stories, and such a thanks for what we could provide.

I always feel that I am the one to give thanks to them for allowing me into their lives ever so briefly that I can give them a respite from their ongoing struggle and stress.

Dear Lord, Thank you for all your daily blessings that you so graciously bestow upon us. Help us to remember that it is within these blessings we are able to share all that we are given. Please bless and remember those brave children and their families. Amen
