Walking in the Light
Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. If you walk in the dark you do not know where you are going."
-- John 12:35
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
-- Psalm: 119:105
What is the first thing you do when you are walking around your house, after you realize that the electricity has gone out? Try to turn on the light switch, of course. We are so accustomed to the light it is hard to get used to living without it. When we were young (and even for some older) we were afraid of the dark. But why? The same things are in the darkness, that are in the light. I’m sure you can easily maneuver around a familiar place, because you know what is there and what to expect. Our Lord, the Lord of light is with us even in the darkness. Even through our most difficult trials. We have been blessed with the knowledge of His presence. We have heard the stories and we believe.
I have been blessed with a glorious week off from work. I have had the opportunity to regroup and recharge. Several of the days were warm enough for me to get out and take a walk on the beach. I used it as a time to reflect on the greatness of the gifts that are all around us and an occasion to listen to the still, small voice of God in my head.
The people of Jesus’ time did not have the privilege of knowledge that we have. They did not understand that the Lord of light was in their presence. When He said that the light would be with them only a little longer they questioned as to why? If they had believed in Him then, would His death be unnecessary? Probably, but like Thomas they had to see to believe. How fortunate that we have the Holy Spirit to whisper in our ears that the son of man has come and saved us from our selves. We believe though we have not seen and we are forgiven our sins, because of it.
Jesus told the apostles and the people to walk with the light - for He knew what was about to happen. He hoped to teach them all He could before He was gone. Fortunately for us, after His death He was resurrected - so the light only left us for a little while. And as long as we believe we will walk in the light and not lose our ways.
Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of time, that we may reflect on your presence with us during the dark days of lent and the warmth of the sun that we may feel your presence still with us while we are waiting for the promised return of your light. Amen
