A Valentine's Devotion
I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which one may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
-- John 6:48-51
Valentine's Day is the eternal day for lovers.
I have loved many people in my life, but my one true love will always be my son, Kyle, as I?m sure it is for Jeff. There is something special about the bond of parent to child. Whether biological or adopted. They love you and you love them back, unconditionally. Long before Kyle was born, he was loved. I remember specifically how much Jeff wanted and loved our baby. He went through great pains to get me to eat well, and he read everything he could to ensure that the child I was carrying would grow and be strong and healthy, despite my having no appetite. Every morning he would make me a Carnation instant breakfast and for lunch I would have a peanut butter sandwich - on whole wheat bread, because the combination provided more protein to nourish the child growing inside of me.
God so loved the world that he sent his only son to proclaim His Good Word, that all who believe in him shall not die but have eternal life with him in heaven. Love was what caused the son to set an example for us all to follow. Bread is what Jesus gave us to remember him by and to nourish our souls. He is the true bread of life, his teachings, examples and sacrifice have provided us with the spiritual protein that we need to grow strong and survive the trials we face everyday.
Dear Lord, on this day help us to follow Jesus' example and love our neighbors as surely as God the father and the son loves us. Every time we receive communion may we truly reflect on God's presence, His body and His blood in the sacrament. Thank you for sending us the true manna from heaven. Amen
