"What Would God Think"
Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, if thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
-- Luke 4:2-4
But by every word of God.....oh so many come to mind. I think of the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, Jesus' commandment that we turn the other cheek, love our enemies, do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with our Lord, pray for those who persecute us, judge not lest we be judged, and the best of all found in Matthew 22:37, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And the second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself." I could go on and on citing examples of words of God.
My husband Paul and I have the great privilege of being sixth grade Sunday School teachers at Holy Trinity. It is a joyful task to teach the chosen curriculum to our class. Several weeks ago our lesson was "Who Was This Jesus?" Part of the lesson was for the children to think about their words and actions in school the week before. WWGT - What Would God Think? They were to write a 3-4 word phrase that God might say to them about their actions.
What would God think of the words and actions in our daily lives? Have we loved our neighbor, prayed for our enemy, not judged anyone, turned the other cheek, and tried to live by every word of God, or have we tried to live by bread alone?
That Sunday School lesson ended with this thought: "Imagine that 100 years from now someone is writing a book about this class because its members made such an impact on the world. What does the book say about you and your classmates?" Now, let's imagine that someone is writing a book about us 100 years from now. What would it say about our character and faith?
"God, teach me to always do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you. Guide my words and my actions. Help me live by your words. Make me an instrument of your peace." Amen
